Lost / Stolen

When losing something in Japan
In Japan, lost or forgotten items are often returned back to the owner safely. So, if you have time, you should not give up and get in contact with the appropriate person. Please provide as much information as possible when calling for a lost item: the location you think your object was lost (for example, station name, route / train name, etc.), the date and time, and the characteristics (colour / shape / size) of the lost item. Once you go to collect your item, please note that you need to prove your identity, with something such as passport or ID.

The management location will start the search as soon as possible. The search goes as follows: from the site you lost the item to the nearest office, lost and found the center and eventually police. You should enquire for your lost item from the place you think you have lost it. From there, the search will proceed according to the steps described above. If you do not know whether you have lost your item or whether it was stolen, or if you do not know where it was lost, the best that you can do is reporting it to the police. Especially when losing your credit card or traveller’s check, notify it immediately. In this case, please note that it is necessary to submit a “Lost and Found” application form.

About thefts
・Cash
In case of cash theft, please report it to the police station near you. You will need to fill out and submit a “Theft or loss report”. If there is physical to you or damage of other properties, it is necessary to describe the damage in accurate detail. Submit all the necessary according to police instructions.

・Air tickets
When reissuing a flight-ticket, a copy of the “Theft or loss notification form” submitted to the police station will be required. So, in the same case as with cash theft mentioned above, fill out and submit a “theft or loss report” at the police station. You will receive a copy of the “Theft or loss report” that you can use when contacting the airline to have your air-ticked reissued.

・Passport
Should you lose your passport or should it get stolen… Promptly report it to the police station. When going to reissue your passport, you will need to provide a copy of your “Theft or loss report” submitted to the police station. Please fill out and submit the “Theft or loss notification form” at the police station near you, and be sure to be returned a copy of it. After that, you can reissue your passport at your country’s consulate in Japan.

・Credit card
If your credit card is lost or stolen, immediately contact your credit card company and block it. Depending on your card company, you may not be able to find a contact in Japan straight away. Please follow the instructions of each credit card company for your reissuing. To reissue, a copy of the “Theft or loss notification” from the Japanese police will also be required.

・Traveler’s check
If you lose your traveller’s cheque, or if it has been stolen, please contact the issuing company immediately. Traveller’s checks are not currently issued in Japan. Be sure to have at hand your home country contact information. A copy of the “Theft or loss notification” from the Japanese police is also required to reissue cheques.

Incident / Accident

Should you be involved in unfortunate trouble, call 110 and 119 for fire and ambulance.

・”110″
In Japan, dial 110 to call the police in an emergency. When you contact them, please stay calm and provide the necessary information by following the instructions you are given. If you are worried about language or if you are doubtful about who to consult, you can call “#9110”, and your call will be forwarded to the appropriate consultation desk.

・”119″
Call 119 in the unlike event of a fire and also to get an ambulance when suddenly ill. When you get in contact, please stay calm and provide the necessary information according to any instructions given. Should you be in trouble to get by verbal explanations, please ask for cooperation if there are Japanese people nearby. When you call yourself, the range of languages that can be provided varies depending on the prefecture. Emergency calls are free, and a select button is provided on public telephones.

If you are sick or injured, please contact the hotel or your lodging’s reception first thing. They should be able to provide guidance. Many tourist information centers and accommodations provide emergency cards, usually in English, that describe how to deal with emergencies. It is a good idea to check out in advance what hospitals support multilingual assistance, as a precaution for sudden injuries or illnesses.
