The age that requires a burdening of social responsibility. In other words, it is the age that is generally regarded as “being an adult”. In Japan, it is “20 years old”. It’s the age at which personal liability arises. This becomes slightly technical, so we’ll leave it out in this blog… “Drinking,” “smoking,” and “purchase / transfer of gambling, lottery and voting tickets” are rights given once you turn 20 in Japan. Additionally, it is illegal to coerce minors into committing these acts. It’s strictly decided by law.
That’s why it’s necessary to check one’s age when they attempt to buy alcoholic beverages and tabacco. The same applies to voting tickets for horse racing / boat racing / car racing. Basically, self-reporting is required, such as the age confirmation button a customer must press at convenience stores, as well as verbal confirmation you are of age. Please note that you may be asked to show your ID in some cases.
If you come from abroad, you can follow most of the laws of your own country as much as you can. But, for example, it’s illegal to coerce minors in Japan. Please be careful and confirm Japanese laws upon entering the country.
